here to submit questions History of the Passion Play In the middle of the Thirty Years War, following months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergauers swore an oath to God that if He spared them from further harm, they would perform the “Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Christ” every ten years. In 1634, they fulfilled their pledge for the first time on a stage erected above the fresh graves of the plague victims.
Nestled at the foothills of the Alps, Oberammergau is one of Bavaria`s most picturesque towns, and a short thirty-minute drive from the Bavarian capital of Munich. It is world famous not only for its Passion Play but also for its exquisite wood carving tradition. Oberammergau maintains a peacefulness uncommon by modern-day standards.
