OBITUARY: Sister Maria Louise Loudon, SSJ
HOLYOKE – Sister of St. Joseph Maria Louise (Shirley) Loudon, 91, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield for 72 years, died in Mont Marie Health Care Center, here, on Aug. 7. A native of Holyoke, she was the daughter of Raymond and Emma (Tagliabue) Loudon.
She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Holyoke and earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from the former Sacred Heart Parish Holyoke.
Later in life, she also received education in nursing science, earning a licensed practical nurse certificate at Dean Vocational School, Holyoke; an associate of science degree in nursing at Springfield Technical Community College; and a bachelor of science degree in nursing at Our Lady of the Elms.
She taught in the Diocese of Springfield at Holy Family and Cathedral High schools, Springfield, and St. Joseph Central High School, Pittsfield. She served as a nurse at Providence Hospital, Holyoke; Municipal Hospital, Springfield; and the Springfield Visiting Nurses Association, the Jewish Nursing Home, and Child Care in Home and Interim Care, all in Springfield. She was a clinical instructor at Elms College.
She retired in 2000.
In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Cecilia Loudon, of Holyoke; and a niece and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Reid and David.
The wake will take place at Mont Marie on Monday, Aug. 11 from 2 to 4:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 3 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held in the Mont Marie Chapel on Monday, Aug. 11 at 5 p.m. Burial will follow in Mont Marie Cemetery.
