Longtime Housatonic pastor, Father Anthony J. Jutt, dies at 87

Father Anthony J. Jutt, formerly of Housatonic, died July 17 at Mary’s Meadow at Providence Place in Holyoke. A priest for the Diocese of Springfield, he was born in Westfield Nov. 17, 1926.

He was the son of the late Konstanty and Beatrice Morris Jutt. Father Jutt was educated in Westfield schools, graduating from Westfield High School in 1944.

He attended St. Charles Minor Seminary in Cantonville, MD, graduating in 1945. He then went on to the Seminary Philosophy and Grand Seminary in Montreal, Canada, from 1945 to 1951.

Father Jutt was ordained to the priesthood June 16, 1951, in St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield by Springfield Bishop Christopher J. Weldon. Father Jutt served as chaplain for the Knights of Columbus in Hawley from June through Aug., 1951 while serving as a curate at St. Jerome Parish in Holyoke.

Father Jutt also served at St. Joseph Parish in Shelburne Falls; Holy Trinity and Blessed Sacrament parishes in Greenfield; the former Immaculate Conception Parish in West Springfield and St. Brigid Parish in Amherst.

He was appointed pastor of Corpus Christi Parish in Housatonic in September of 1972, where he served until his retirement in December, 2006. In 1992, he was also made pastor of All Saints Parish in Housatonic.

Father Jutt’s 34-year pastorate devotion and dedication to the parish will long be remembered.

Father Jutt is survived by one sister, Anne M. Jutt of Westfield, and his longtime secretary and housekeeper Nancy O’Grady. Father Jutt was predeceased by three brothers, Reverend John Jutt, his twin, Reverend Julius Jutt and Joseph Jutt; two sisters, Nelle Jutt and Mary B. Jutt, and a sister-in-law, Helen Jutt.

Funeral services for Father Jutt will be held on Tuesday July 22, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Corpus Christi Church, Housatonic. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Westfield at 2 p.m.

Friends will be received Monday, July 21 from 4-7 p.m. at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Corpus Christi Church.
