CHICOPEE – American Legion Paper City Post 325 of Holyoke and Holyoke Catholic High School, here, announced that juniors Michael Sweeney (fourth from left) of East Longmeadow and Gabriel Cifuentes (third from left) of Ludlow have been selected to participate in the upcoming 2014 Massachusetts Boys State Program.

The Massachusetts Boys State Program will be held from Saturday, June 14 through Friday, June 20 on the campus of Stonehill College in North Easton, Mass

According to Massachusetts Boys State chairman Mark Avis (left, in above photo), “Mentoring of youth is one of the ‘Four Pillars’ of the American Legion.” At Boys State, young men are exposed to the rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities of a franchised citizen.

Boys State is a one-week intensive educational program of government instruction for high school juniors. Selection for the program is recognition of a student’s leadership ability and potential. Boys State is an active learning and participatory program where each student plays a vital role in local, county and state government.

The Boys State learning experience is objective and practical. It includes city, county and state governments operated at the program by students elected to various offices at the local, state and federal level, including governor and United States senator. Students also can compete to be appointed to unelected positions, such as state judgeships.

Activities at Boys State include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus, newspaper publication and other recreational programs.
