OBITUARY: Sister Mary Dominica Gallagher, SSJ
RUTLAND, Vt. – Sister of St. Joseph Mary Dominica (Catherine) Gallagher, 102, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, died on June 1in Mountain View Center, here, a few days after celebrating the 85th anniversary of her religious profession.
Born in North Walpole, N.H., she was the daughter of Thomas and Bridget Gallagher.
She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Vermont from St. Peter Parish, North Walpole. She was educated in the North Walpole schools.
She became a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield in 2001 when the two communities merged.
She ministered to her community as a cook for many years in St. Michael Convent, Brattleboro, Vt.; St. Francis Convent, Bennington, Vt.; St. Charles Convent, Bellows Falls, Vt.; and Mt. St. Joseph Convent, Rutland. Later she served as infirmarian at Mt. St. Joseph Convent, Rutland.
In 1991 she retired at St. Joseph Residence, where she served as a volunteer, visiting the sick in nursing homes.
In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She also is survived by Pamela Merritt and Alice Heath, both of Rutland, for whom she cared in their young lives. Sister Gallagher was predeceased by all 10 of her siblings.
The wake will take place in St. Peter Church, Convent Avenue, Rutland, starting at 10 a.m. on June 9. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow in St. Peter Church at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Rutland, at a later date.
