Holyoke Catholic students headed to national speech competition

Staff report

SPRINGFIELD – Holyoke Catholic High School speech team students Chad Nowlan (left) and Cristina Roselli will be in Chicago this Memorial Day Weekend, competing in the Duo Category in the National Catholic Forensic League National Speech Tournament.

“We are very proud and excited for them both,” said Eva Stockhamer, who directs the speech team at Holyoke Catholic.

Stockhamer, who also directs the school’s Performing Arts Club, said this will be the first time Holyoke Catholic students are competing in the national league. “Our state meet was in April and all the students did a wonderful job,” she said.

At the national competition, Nowlan and Roselli will present a performance entitled, “Ana and August,” about how a couple had met as children. “They are not allowed tollok at each other during the performance, yet still must interact – as difficult as that sounds,” Stockhamer said. “There is a ten-minute time restriction and the categories for duo are very wide. They must choose a piece of published work and it can be on any topic.”

“We are very proud of Cristina Roselli and Chad Nowlan as they go to compete in this other league for a national title,” Stockhamer told iobserve.
