OBITUARY: Sister Mary Anne Nolan, SSJ

HOLYOKE – Sister of St. Joseph Mary Anne Nolan (formerly Sister Christopher John), 84, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield died in Mont Marie Health Care Center, Holyoke, on May 10.
Born in North Adams, she was the daughter of John and Anne (Merrigan) Nolan. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from St. Francis of Assisi Parish, North Adams in 1950, after graduating from the former St. Joseph High School, North Adams and earning a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee.
She taught in the Diocese of Springfield in the former Holy Family, Our Lady of Hope and St. Matthew schools, Springfield; the former Holy Rosary and Our Lady of Perpetual Help schools, Holyoke; St. Thomas the Apostle School, West Springfield; St. Mary School, Westfield; and the former Annunciation School, Northampton.
In the Diocese of Providence, R.I., she taught in Sacred Heart School, Pawtucket and St. Francis School, Warwick. She served on the staff at the College of Our Lady of the Elms and as pastoral minister at Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Southwick. She also worked at a home for unwed mothers in Westfield.
For nearly 20 years she was an editorial production associate for the Catholic Communications ministry of the Springfield Diocese, continuing to assist there into the early years of her retirement to Mont Marie. She was a proofreader, archivist and calendar editor for The Catholic Observer, the diocesan newspaper.
In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her nephews, John Nolan, and his wife, Susan, of North Adams; William Nolan and his wife, Brenda, of Clarksburg; her niece, Patricia Jerwick, and her husband, John, of Hagerstown, Md.; and her sister-in-law, Sally Nolan, of North Adams.
She was predeceased by her brother, John Nolan, of North Adams and her sister, Sister of St. Joseph Therese Nolan.
The wake will take place at Mont Marie on Wednesday, May 14 from 2 to 4:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 3 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial in Mont Marie Chapel will be at 5 p.m., followed by burial in Mont Marie Cemetery.
