Staff report

SPRINGFIELD – During the first few weeks of January, visitors to St. Michael’s Academy (SMA) may have heard hammering, sawing and various other electric tools at work in the eighth-grade classrooms.

Students have worked for the last five months to gather information, select a location, and conceptualize their own SMA “Charter Academy of the Future.”

Students competed in the school competition on Wednesday, Jan. 22. A judging panel, consisting of an architect, a contractor, a realtor, a facilities manager and a local community representative was tasked with choosing the winning team to compete in the state competition to be held in February.

There are many components that go into a winning project and students focused on applying traditionally abstract concepts to a real-world project.

On Sunday, Jan. 26, the school’s winners, pictured above, were announced: Liam Sears, Margaret Martin, Aleksandra Dougal, Joancy Espinal, Nora Markey, Adriana Gonzalez and Nicolas Dubois (not pictured).
