OBITUARY: Sister Ellen Therese Barry, SSJ
HOLYOKE – Sister of St. Joseph Ellen Therese Barry (formerly Sister Ellen Mary), 96, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield in her 76th year in the congregation, died in Mont Marie Health Care Center, Holyoke, on Jan. 20.
A native of Bellows Falls, Vt., she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Loughlin) Barry. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Vermont in 1938 from St. Charles Parish, Bellows Falls. She became a Sister of St. Joseph of Springfield in 2001 when the two communities merged. She graduated from Bellows Falls High School. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Regis College, Weston, Mass.
She taught in Christ the King and St. Peter schools, Rutland, Vt., and at St. Mary School, Fair Haven, Vt. She was at Sacred Heart School, Bennington, Vt., for close to 30 years, serving as teacher and also as principal.
In her retirement she resided in Bennington, continuing her association with former students, colleagues and friends.
In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her nephews, David Barry of Florida and James Barry of Georgia; and by her niece, Judith Bowen of East Dorset, Vt. She also leaves her friend and caretaker of many years, Doris Maguire and her family of Bennington.
The wake will take place at Sacred Heart-St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on Friday morning, Jan. 24 from 9-11 a.m. A funeral Mass will follow in the church at 11 a.m. Her burial will take place in the spring in Rutland.
