OBITUARY: Sister Eliene Bastarache, SSA; taught in Ludlow
MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Sister of St. Anne Eliene Bastarache, known in religion as Sister Marie Azelie, died at the age of 97 at Marie Esther Health Center, here, on Nov. 29. She recently celebrated 75 years of vowed religious life.
She was the daughter of Damien Joseph and Elise (Leger) Bastarache of Lynn, Mass. She completed her elementary education at St. Jean the Baptist School in Lynn and obtained her high school diploma from St. Anne Academy in Marlborough. She held a bachelor of education degree from Catholic Teachers College of Providence, R.I.
In 1936, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Anne in Lachine, Quebec, Canada and professed vows in 1938. She returned to the United States immediately after pronouncing her vows and began her long teaching career in Ludlow, where she spent the first 13 years of her ministry.
She also served 19 years as principal and superior in schools and houses staffed by the congregation in Ludlow, Lynn, Wayland, and Marlborough, all in Massachusetts; and in Manville and Central Falls, R.I. In 1988, after retiring from teaching, she moved to St. Anne Convent in Marlborough where she performed many community services.
She is survived her sisters in religion and by her nieces and nephews. The wake will be held at St. Anne Convent, 720 Boston Post Rd., Marlborough, on Dec. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by a prayer service. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. in the convent chapel, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Marlborough.
