OBITUARY: Sister Marion Hurley, SSJ
HOLYOKE – Sister of St. Joseph Marion Hurley (formerly Sister Margaret Eugene), 95, member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died in Mont Marie Health Care Center, here, on Nov. 2. She was in the 77th year of her religious life.
A native of Holyoke, she was the daughter of Eugene and Margaret (Hannon) Hurley. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield in 1936 from St. Jerome Parish, Holyoke. Her early education was at the former St. Jerome School and she graduated from the former St. Jerome High School, both in Holyoke. She earned a bachelor's degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee.
She ministered in the Diocese of Springfield as a teacher at the former St. Joseph School, North Adams; as teacher and principal at the former St. Mary School, Northampton, and as principal at St. Jerome High School; she was a teacher in the Diocese of Providence, R.I., at St. Joseph (Hazard Memorial) School, Newport and in the Diocese of Worcester, Mass., at St. Stephen High School, Worcester and St. Mary School, Southbridge.
From 1971-1979 she served on the executive board of the Sisters of St. Joseph. She was on the staff of the College of Our Lady of the Elms' Alumnae Library from 1979-2002, continuing as a volunteer after her retirement. She joined the St. Joseph Residence at Mont Marie in 2005.
In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her sister, Eleanor Morrissey, of Holyoke and her brother, Robert Hurley, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and their families. She was predeceased by her brother, Eugene Hurley, of Spencer, Mass.
The wake will take place at Mont Marie on Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 2 to 4:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 3 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m., with burial in Mont Marie Cemetery.
