OBITUARY: Sister Mary John Cordasco
WEST SPRINGFIELD – Dominican Sister Mary John Cordasco, 92, of the Dominican Nuns, here, died Jan. 23 at Mount St. Vincent Care Center, Holyoke, after a brief illness.
She was born on Feb. 28, 1920 in Newark, N.J., and was the daughter of the late Cesare (“Jesse”) and Mariannina (DiLorenzo) Cordasco. She was educated in New Jersey schools and in 1949 entered the Dominican Monastery of St. Dominic in Newark, where she helped with the sewing for many years.
In 2003 she transferred to the Dominican Monastery of the Mother of God in West Springfield.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her three brothers, Peter, Jerry and Ralph, and by her sister, Teresa. She leaves a cousin, Leo (“Buddy”) Puccacco, of Carrollton, Texas; a niece, Colleen Cordasco, of East Orange, N.J.; and her good friend, Barbara Brady, of Winchester, Va., along with other relatives and friends.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at the Dominican Monastery, 1430 Riverdale St., West Springfield, on Friday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery on the monastery grounds. Calling hours will be at the monastery on Thursday, Jan. 24 from 4-8 p.m., and on Friday from 9-10:30 a.m.
