SPRINGFIELD – A 74-year-old priest was shaken up but not seriously harmed after an unknown assailant pushed him over and stole the weekly collection from him as he walked to the rectory after the 4 p.m. Mass last Saturday.

Conventual Franciscan Father Alexander Cymerman, pastor of Our Lady of the Cross Parish, located on Sycamore Street in Holyoke, was carrying the weekly collection under his arm as he headed across the street to the rectory in the darkness at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24. According to a parish staff member who spoke to iobserve, an assailant approached Father Cymerman from behind, pushed the priest to the ground and grabbed the collection envelopes from him.

Father Cymerman was slightly hurt but did not require hospitalization, the staff member said.

The Holyoke Police Department’s special investigations unit is investigating the crime but would not release any information as of late Monday morning.
